Maasai Mara is an extension of the Serengeti ecosystem to the south. Game abounds here, particularly when the migration is on, and millions of wildebeests and zebras make their way back and forth across the Mara River on their annual trek. The Mara is also noted for its abundance of lions - particularly the superb black maned males. Look out to see lots of elephants here often in large herds, as well as - if you're lucky - leopard, cheetah and rhino. All of the Big Five are residents. You're likely to see the African buffalo. Get the cameras ready and enjoy yourselves!
The cost is divided into two regions, north and south with the town of Mombasa being the delineation point. Mombasa, Kenya’s second largest town and its only major port, is built on an island. There is record of the town’s existence as far back as 2,000 years and it was once a major centre for spice, ivory and slave trade. The Portuguese Fort Jesus stands as a reminder of the struggle between the colonising forces of Europe and Arabia. When the British arrived, Mombasa became the originating point of the railroad to Uganda. With it’s strong Muslim influence and rich Swahili culture, the coast is an interesting contrast to the wildlife areas. There are numerous small hotels and larger resorts stretching northward along the coast. A ferry takes visitors to the south coast and the border with Tanzania where the best fishing areas are. Nearby the town of Mombasa is the Kamba village, where it’s possible to watch local carvers craft sculptures of all sorts and sizes from the rare ebony wood.
